I just became a member of Etsy Metal, and one of the challenges that they promote is to blog about a given subject each month. This month's subject is "Create an inspirational 20 things to do to kick start creativity." So, here are my 20!

1. Keep communication lines open. Talk to creative people and bounce ideas off of them.
2. Always be on the lookout for good design. Whether it is jewelry, architecture, furniture, etc. If you like something enough, take a picture and archive it.
3.Participate in activities that challenge you to think creatively. Join a club like Etsy Metal, SNAG, Crafthaus, or something as simple as reading and writing blogs on the subject.
4. Take an "inspirational walk" get some fresh air. Get your legs and arms moving. This will help get your brain moving as well.
5. Meditate. Close your eyes and picture yourself working in your space. I do this every chance I get. It's like counting sheep for me when I can't sleep.
6. Subscribe to inspirational magazines. Metalsmith, Craft, Jewelry Artist.
7. Seek out new books. Sign up for an account with Amazon and type in books that you own. They will recommend similar publications for you to check out. BE A BOOK STALKER! Search the wish lists of artists you admire and see what they are asking for. This is a great way to find inspirational publications! (No one has to know).
8.Be a blog stalker! Find out what blogs your favorite artists are bookmarking.
9.Be an Etsy stalker! Find out what shops your favorite artists are "hearting".... you get the idea?
10.Participate in challenges. Etsy metal offers daily, weekly, monthly project challenges. Art Jeweler is always asking for sketch submissions. Participate in as much as you can.
11.Make models.
12. Give yourself plenty of "play time" with your materials. Sometimes the best designs happen when you have no clue what you're doing. Let the materials guide your decisions.
13. Make your workspace comfortable. Take time to clean it if you can't stand clutter. Find music that offers the best working mood for you.
14. Sometimes just sitting at your bench will help kick start motivation. When you don't feel like working, force yourself to just sit in your space.
15. Remove distractions. I've learned to keep my laptop out of my studio if I need to get serious work done. Turn your phone off if you have to as well.
16.Take workshops whenever possible! I know they are expensive, but save up, and deduct the expenses!
17. Make friends with colleges and universities that offer metalsmithing and jewelry design courses. Friend them on FaceBook. Go to their art openings. See if they have guest lectures/ workshops open to the public.
19. Force yourself to learn a new technique. This opens up more design possibilities for you and will increase your knowledge and skills.
20.SKETCH! This is a big one that I need to practice more. Draw every idea that comes to mind. Even the bad ones, and never throw out a notebook! As you grow as a metalsmith, sometimes ideas from old sketches will "click" later on. A good design that was previously beyond your skill level could now be a piece of cake to produce.

Enameling

I just realized that I never posted the pictures from my enameling class. After my computer crashed, I lost my original images so I took some quick shots of my samples to post.

Cloisonne with transparent enamels over white.

Stenciling technique with opaque enamels and painting technique with acrylic enamels. This sample is still in progress.

Champlave with transparent enamels. The transparents burned a bit because my design had too many small areas. This resulted in a golden brown color in all of the "tight" spots. It actually looks very pretty on this piece.

This hasn't been cleaned up properly yet, but my Mom spent the day in the studio with me last night and she made a color sample for our opaque enamels. We'll be doing one next week for all of our transparent enamels.

Waiting For The Fix

My hard drive crashed over the weekend and I haven't been able to post anything. I'm waiting for my applications to get re-installed to my new hard drive and in the meantime don't have any pictures to post of what I'm working on. Hopefully I'll be able to get my information off of my old hard drive.

Enameling Workshop!

As a result of purchasing my enameling kiln, I decided I'd like to brush up on some techniques that I've learned. I started doing some research on classes and workshops available in my area. I thought I'd find a handful of options offered throughout the year. Instead, I found one. One workshop in western New York for the entire year. And it's THIS weekend.

At first I thought it would be impossible to attend with no money saved up. And then I contacted the coordinator of the event. She was able to work with me on the price, along with allowing me to make several installments to pay for the weekend.

The workshop is three days long, and will be offered by the Oatka School of Glass in Batavia, New York. It will be taught by enamelist Katharine S. Wood. Her work is published in the book "The Art of Fine Enameling". She has been working with enamels for over 20 years. She does all types of enameling, however, she specializes in the technique called champleve'. This combines acid etching and enameling. Both are my current focus.

I cant wait! I am certain that this workshop will help me to improve my skills, expand my knowledge of enameling, and give me great inspiration and motivation to move forward with my work!

2010 Craft Show Schedule Advice Needed

I'm planning out my 2010 show schedule. I work at my "real job" four days a week and will be taking one class (3 hrs twice a week). My class runs from the end of January to the beginning of May. I am starting to wonder, how many shows should I do?

I will have approximately two-three days/ week to work on jewelry (plus evenings, but I shouldn't depend on them). If I stretch my show season from May to November- what would be a reasonable amount of shows to do? I'm thinking two shows a month will keep me very busy, yet still allow me to enjoy my summer a bit.

How many shows do you do a year? What kind of schedule do you have as far as studio time goes? And how much inventory do you plan to have for each show?

It's 1:00 AM and I'm still awake. My kiln came today! As excited as I am, I'm terrified to set it up. I'm not good with directions, and a kiln is something I should really know how to use before I use it. Right? So I decided to get up in the middle of the night to read through the packet that accompanied the beast. I feel better.

Now I realize that I'm missing some essential tools that I need to actually do the enameling. A firing fork, a trivet stand, spatula, sifters that work (my homemade ones are really inefficient.) So instead of easing my mind back to sleep, I now have to do a search for the missing puzzle pieces. I've gone this far, I can't procrastinate now because I'm missing some odds and ends.

I thought this was a great idea and so I'm going to make a list of all mine. 2009 was a unique year and many things happened that were life changing. Rhino CAD

I am going back to school! I finally have the gumption to finish my degree. I'm so excited and ready to tie up my loose ends!

This semester I enrolled in a 3D design course in Rhino CAD. This program will allow me to design and create 3 dimentional images on my computer. I am a little intimidated by the whole concept, but also very confident that it will help me with my rendering skills. Even if I don't use the program after the course I believe it will allow me to visualize my jewelry sketches in 3D better.

It's also that time of year when applications for summer craft festivals are due. I'm knee deep in forms and paperwork. I'm getting my schedule organized for the year and I'm very excited about what this year will hold.

I have both an indoor and outdoor booth now, and so this year all I've got to worry about is inventory! With my enameling kiln in the mail and a heap of metal waiting to be transformed, I'm ready to get started!

Back In Action!

Has it really been over a month and a half since I last blogged?! I guess so!

Well, if anyone has been wondering what I've been up to, this is it.

My sister-in-law and I did two holiday shows together. The first one was pretty uneventful for both of us, but the second one was wonderful! We did a private jewelry party for a friend and it ended up being very successful for us. On top of that, it was a lot of fun!

After the shows, I tried to focus on my full time job and life at home. It was my first married Christmas with my husband! We enjoyed a lazy holiday break together and got around to cleaning out some more of our cluttered basement. We've got a long way to go, but made great progress.

I cleaned out my studio, got a small amount of work done....and then I did it. I finally ordered an enameling kiln! I'm so excited to start experimenting with it! I took an enameling class in college, and fell in love with it. I hope I get plenty of use out of this investment! The image below is the model I ordered.

My New Ambition

The past week I've had to put the studio on hold. My poor husband came down with a horrible stomach bug that wiped him out for a good portion of the week. While trying to be a good care giver I decided I'd also better focus my attention to the neglected household. I've been cleaning the house for the past week (It was pretty bad. Beyond embarrassing.) By now, I've gotten the house pretty much cleaned up. There is just a little bit of organizing to do in the office and spare bedroom. Once those are done, I'll be tackling the overwhelming basement (and garage if it doesn't get too cold).

I've made the decision to be more aware of the condition of the house. Mike and I are trying to figure out how to change our lifestyle so we are able to keep up with daily chores better. It makes such a huge difference in my mood and motivation when everything is in it's place.

I'm hoping that once the house is all organized I'll be more motivated to work in the studio. I need to find a balance between my husband, work, house and studio time. I've got to figure out a way to maintain my energy.

The past three weeks have been very tough for me. Before Mike got sick, I didn't have an ounce of energy to do anything. I had such a hard time getting out of bed, and staying out of it. Work was difficult, studio time didn't exist, and poor Mike would come home from work and all I'd want to do is go to bed. I think it was just the onset of the fall like weather that drained me. Now that I feel like myself again I need to make the most of it and figure out how to get back on track.

Big Order!

My biggest order of metal yet has finally come in! I ordered a boat load of argentium silver sheet, wire and tubing for a bunch of projects I'm working on. But what I'm really excited about is the copper and brass that i ordered for acid etching. I have so much that I want to do! I also ordered some 24gauge copper to play around with. I want to do some fold forming, and then enamel it using the torch firing techniques. I can't wait to get going! There's not enough time or energy for my big plans!

Fisher-Price Holiday Craft Show

WOW! I can't believe how fast October is going by! I was thinking about my upcoming show with the perception that I had at least two more weeks to work on stuff. My sister-in-law, who is also participating just informed me that it is THIS week! I guess there will be some things that won't get done, but I'm prepared enough for the show without them.

The show I'm doing is a holiday sale at Fisher-Price. We set up a table and chit-chat with designers and engineers all day as they pass by. It's a one day event, and not open to the public, but it is great advertising, as many of the employees frequent the other local shows in town throughout the year.

I did this Christmas sale last year as my first show. Since then I've done two outdoor shows, and two indoor shows. I feel like I've come a long way! I hope to do many more next year. This year was filled with weddings and other events that prevented me from applying to more.

Let the Christmas shopping begin!

All In Perspective.

Monday's studio day was spent at the Dr.'s office, and at the blood clinic having my blood drawn. I had some routine blood work done that almost killed me! OK, yes I'm exaggerating. I didn't almost die, but I DID almost pass out. I've never passed out in my life, but I got so worked up about having my blood taken that I started shaking and feeling dizzy... couldn't feel my limbs except that they were cold, and my abdomen was on fire. I started dripping with sweat. When my vision started closing in and blurring, the nurse made the decision to take the needle out to let the life back into me.

After a 20 minute breather, the color had mostly returned to my face and she was able to stick me again to finish the job. This time she moved me to a chair that reclined so I was able to lay down. I was calm throughout the session, and didn't want to make a big deal of anything, but I still felt so silly that my fear of needles is a little unreasonable.

I was able to give her the 9 vials she needed to complete the tests requested. But after that, I went straight to bed. What would I ever do if I had to give blood all of the time? I guess I'd get used to it, but boy I don't think that would be easy. I started thinking about all of those individuals who need to give blood on a regular basis, or those who need dialysis. God, how can I be so afraid? I felt pretty ashamed.

I left the clinic that day not thinking much of my test results. I went on with my week at work.

Yesterday happened to be another studio day. I started out my day with a phone call from the Dr.'s office. My tests came back, and my vitamin B12 levels were abnormally low. I thought "no big deal, I'll take a supplement". But the nurse went on to explain that I can't take a pill to get my levels up because I lack the ability to absorb B12 during digestion. I listened on to hear her say that I will need to have my doses regularly injected for life. daily at first, weekly and then Monthly. I would have to learn to give myself shots, or have my husband learn how to inject me.

I was in a little bit of shock. I've always been pretty healthy, and to say that there is a part of my body not functioning was very scary. I'm not opposed to medication, in fact, I do take regular prescriptions daily. But the thought of having to inject medication into my arm was very unnerving.

That afternoon, Mike and I went to visit with the nurse so she could show us how to start the medication right away. I'm so lucky to have Mike. He was a huge comfort, and the fact that he was calm along with the nurse made me think that "hey, this isn't a big deal". My body isn't able to do something... but we can work with it.

I am tired frequently, I'm being treated for depression, and my memory has been so bad lately. I blamed my tiredness and my lack of memory on the medications that I have been taking for my depression. I started to feel so much better that these traits that I have (including bouts of depression), are not traits at all. They are symptoms. All symptoms that are being caused, or made worse by my lack of B12.

Instead of feeling scared and in shock, I started feeling good! Good that I am able to do something about how I feel. My treatments, however scary they initially seemed, I realize are no big deal. I got through the first injection just fine! Mike did a great job. I didn't even feel it! Now all I have to do is be thankful. I realize how lucky I am to be able to maintain good health.

Knot Necklace

I'm playing in the studio with my "signature pieces", for lack of a better term. I'm taking the components for my knot earrings and stringing them to figure out a way to create a collar style necklace.

So far, this layout seems to be catching my eye. Two little knot bodies per wire at varying lengths. I have a long way to go, but I'm excited about taking the knot series to a different level!

New Photo Booth!

The jewelry store that I manage is getting a new website shortly, and all of our inventory needs to be photographed so it can be put online. Sooooo, my boss had me order a photo tent so we can have professional pictures taken.

Here's the fun part. Once the photos are taken for the website, there's not much room in the store to keep this mammoth tent set up. He told me I could take the whole getup home and use it for my own jewelry! How cool is that?!

Below is the old booth that I was using (well, actually, this is the one my professor uses, mine is a little bit more primitive). While it took some pretty decent pictures, I'm really looking forward to seeing what the new booth can do. So far the images taken for work look pretty impressive! I could see the oil smudge from my finger prints in perfect focus on a ring I photographed! The lighting that came with the tent is great and the tent does a wonderful job of diffusing hot spots!

Monet at Giverny

This is the first of many collaborations between my sister-in-law and I. Inspired by Monet's paintings at Giverny, we created this piece from sterling silver, rhyolite rainforest jasper, pearls and sun stone.

I fabricated the silver pieces and set the pearls into them, and Erika laid out the components and assembled the necklace.

I'm so pleased with the way this first piece turned out. We've already got the plan for our second design. The next design is inspired by Georges Seurat.

JEMKohl Memorial Fishing Tournament

Today was day one of the 2009 JEMKohl memorial fishing tournament. This annual tournament was started by my husband to remember his late mother. Every year, we gather some friends to go fishing (this year is going to be a two day tourney). The rules always vary. We usually come up with a new point system to determine the winner of the tournament... biggest fish, most fish, most species of fish.

This year, due to the tournament being two days long, we kept it simple and decided that the winner would just have to catch the biggest salmon- since it is salmon season after all.

So far, Mike is in the lead with a 20 lb salmon. He caught two salmon today. Our friend Sue and I each caught one steelhead. Both were beautifully colored fish!

We all enjoyed a relaxing day on the Niagara river with captain Frank Campbell. If you are ever in Western New York visiting Niagara Falls, be sure to book a fishing trip with Captain Frank. Blog List

I love what I do and I'm very passionate about it. I love every part of the creative process for the most part. And I really enjoy seeing what other people in my field are doing with their own creative processes.

The ONLY downside to having a home studio would be the lack of interaction I have with other metalsmiths and jewelry artists. I often miss the creative banter that I used to have between my classmates/professors and I when I was in college.

One way I remedy this is to keep a blog list of the many artists in my field. I read fellow artist's blogs from around the world, keeping track of the projects they're working on. It is such a wonderful tool for interacting. Right now I follow 150 other artists of many different skill levels. How do I follow 150 artists? I read my blog list every morning and every night. Approximately 10-15 short blogs per sitting. Most people don't post on a daily basis so it is pretty easy to keep up with every one's blogs.

I consider these people to be my co-workers, and in some cases friends. People working towards a similar goal. Some might view them as competitors, but I don't see it that way. The only way I can improve as an artist is to have some sort of insight on what other people are doing with their craft. It is very important that I stay connected with the design world.

Of course you already know that this is what a blog list is for, but I'd like point out the blogs that I read. If you read and enjoy my blog, please take a look at my blog list and skim through the other artists that I enjoy reading about. If you have suggestions for more blogs that i don't currently follow please let me know! I'm always looking!

Keeping Busy

On top of the many other things I'm working on in the studio right now, I am getting ready to do a batch of etched pieces. I've got all my designs drawn and ready to be printed on transfer paper. I'm planning on documenting the process for an etching tutorial.

Grandma's Pendant

Last year I blogged about a beautiful labradorite that I picked out to give to my Grandmother for her birthday. Well, her birthday came and went and I didn't get a chance to make a setting for the stone. This year, Grandma was on the top of my list and after a long wait she got her Labradorite.

I picked a blue heron to put on the back of her pendant because Grandma and Grandpa used to give us the heron report from her vacations to Florida. "We counted 6 blue herons on the way down and 10 on the way back!"

Giveaway Advice Needed!

Yup, I'm looking for giveaway advice. I think I've mustered up the courage to do my very first jewelry giveaway. I don't know what piece/ pieces, or how to even get started with something like this. If anyone has any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I was thinking of something that could combine twitter, facebook, blogs and my Etsy site...is that just too ridiculous? Or would it be manageable since they're linked? I want to reach as many people as possible...

So this is what I'd need to know:
Where do you post info?
How long is a reasonable amount of time to let people enter my contest?
What should I have them do to enter? Maybe post a link to their blog/ FB or Twitter Accounts in an attempt to help advertise my work?
How do I keep track of who did what?
And most importantly, how do I decide who wins? Pick a name out of a hat?

I normally don't do custom work because of my limited time in the studio, but I just had to make a trade with my sister-in-law for some of her beautiful labordorite earrings that she makes. I wanted a special gift for my Grandma, and she wanted a special gift for a good friend of hers, so I agreed, and here I go!

I'm making a pendant with an elephant on the back with this beautiful stone. It's some sort of jasper...but I forget what kind. (It's one of the millions of jaspers out there). Anyway, It's getting started today, I'll post the end product when I'm done.

Here it is! My first apple pie. I think next time I need to put the pie on a lower shelf and uncover the edges a bit sooner. It smells really good though. Can't wait to dig in!

I've been so busy this summer that i haven't been able to post the new work i had done for the shows I was in. I entered three shows before the wedding and here are the pieces that i finished for them.

Above is my pinwheel series. Oxidized and textured copper and sterling silver.

These earrings are part of my knot series. They're the dangle version of my knot studs. I had some beautiful pendants that i sold before I was able to photograph. More to come!

My split pea soup studs are just tiny burnished circles of sterling silver with little curved and oxidized semi-circles soldered to them. Very delicate, and hardly 1/4 of an inch in diameter.

I made the bridesmaids pendants to match each girl's dress (along with our best maid wearing black on the men's side, her pendant matched the maid of honor). Each bridesmaid had a different shade of blue. I used a beautiful light blue glass for the maid of honor and best maid, dumeteiorite, and two shades of lapis for the other girls. Each pendant had an Asian themed flower cut out with the exception of the Fleur de lis, and sun and moon cut outs. All sterling silver.

I'm still recovering from the busiest weekend I've ever had. My good friends Chantal and Rob got married on Friday. Their wedding was so beautiful, and the reception was so much fun. It was the first time in a long time that I was able to forget all the hectic stuff going on in my life. I danced my butt off, and got to see a lot of friends that I've lost touch with over the years.

Right after the wedding, I loaded the car so that I could set up for the Corn Hill Festival in Rochester. Saturday morning, I headed out to do the show. The build up of stress, anticipation, and hard work came down to this weekend. The last show of the summer for me. Thank god I had my sister, Mike, and friend Garrett to help me set the booth up.

The show, to say the least- was pretty crappy. It poured buckets Saturday afternoon and turned the crowds away. Sunday the weather was absolutely beautiful. The streets were packed, but no one was buying metalworked jewelry.

I got a lot of compliments on my work though. One woman said I had the most beautiful jewelry at the show (she didn't buy anything). Another woman bought a pair of earrings, and thanked me over and over for making such unique designs that were reasonably priced. That made me feel very good.

Sunday, my friend Mary helped me man my booth. I was a little more awake than the day before, so we had a pretty good time watching the crowd. We played some people watching games to pass the time. Then my Mom drove out to help us take everything down. I don't know how people can manage to do a show by themselves. It is just so much work!

Luckily, I don't work on Mondays, so I got to sleep in. I hung out with the pets in bed all day. I'm still tired even after a whole day of lounging. I think the hype needs to wear off, and I need to get back into a routine before I'll feel back to normal again.

I really would like to post pictures of the new work I made for the shows. I'll be posting those as soon as I get my camera out.

Fast Forward

It's already July! I feel like I've been stuck in a cave since the middle of January getting ready for the summer, and all of a sudden it's here!

I just finished up my second show of the year last weekend. The Roycroft arts festival (my first outdoor show). It was so stressful trying to visualize how my booth would look, how the weather would hold up, how the traffic would be. I'm so glad its over!
I did great at the show- lots of wonderful feedback on my jewelry and my booth display.

Now that it's over, I have exactly one week until my third and last show of the summer. Right after my good friend's wedding on Friday, I'll be packing the truck and heading to Rochester for the Corn Hill festival. Another outdoor show.

Right now-between working full time and planning my wedding, I'm in the studio trying to replenish my stock. Along with trying to come up with some new designs to liven things up. (I've already had several return customers, so I need some new pieces!)

After the show- I'll have just under one month to put together the rest of my wedding plans! August 8th is the big day, and It's flying at me so fast!

I like being busy, but I think I'm pushing my limits with all of the things going on in my life right now. I'd really like to be posting pictures of my new work, and of my booths on my blog- as well as new items on Etsy, but currently it seems impossible. I can't wait to get back into a routine again- and maybe enjoy a little time off? Sounds like a dream to me.

A Whole Month!

I happened to check my blog today after taking a break from it for a "few days". I realized that I haven't been on in a whole month!

I've been busy with show preparations, wedding stuff, a little overtime at work- and everything else that requires time.

I have the skeleton for my indoor booth made- and my mom came over to hem 12 panels for the walls! What a task. I've been meaning to post pictures, but as of yet- I don't have any.

I'll be Ironing out my fabric, getting my table linens, cases and displays out in the next week to do my first indoor show!

Booth Fabric

I picked out some fabric for the walls of the indoor booth I'll be making. (see my last post). It's a light ivory cotton with a light embroidered pattern. So delicate, and gives a nice texture. I bought a cream colored muslin to back the delicate fabric. This will coordinate with the warm earthy decor of the inside components in my booth.

While fighting my lingering cold, I've been planning the framework for my indoor booth display. I ordered plans from JewelHut to create an all PVC frame, which I will cover with fabric, and some banners with my logo on it...(wait, I don't have a logo! Uh oh). Anyway, The plans seem very easy to follow, and the booth seems easy to construct. The picture below is JewelHut's version of the display. I'm going to change it up a bit with the fabrics and spray paint to suit my own booth better, but I think it will turn out just fine!

The colors for our wedding are shades of blue, and I found a matching stone for each bridesmaid to make a pendant with. I went to the gem show with my color swatches- and I think people thought I was nuts, but I managed to find the right shades!

I found out this weekend that I got accepted into the third show I applied for. The Roycroft summer art festival! I also applied for the winter art show, but I'm on the wait list for that one.

I got into all three summer festivals I applied for! I'm glad I didn't apply for more, because with the wedding and my three shows- I'll be up to my eyeballs in stuff to do!

Thinking Ahead

The last show I did, I scrambled the night before stamping boxes. BOXES. I should have been getting organized and fidgeting with other details. So, in preparation for my first show of the year, I decided to get a jump on my boxes far in advance. My show is the last weekend in May, and with the help of my friend Sue, we got 250 boxes stamped and embossed in no time!

Cleaning Day

I cleaned the house spotless after it almost caved in on me with junk! Unfortunately that means I didn't get to spend my day in my studio. However, my order from Rio Grande came in, and I am once again stocked with silver sheet- etching materials, and some final enamel accessories that I need to start torch fire enameling.

Next I'll be working on some unfinished pieces that I've had sitting around, and also making some more Sunburst earrings and pendants.

It's so refreshing to finally have the house cleaned. Now to get back to work in the studio!

Mike's Wedding Band

Mike's wedding band came in the mail yesterday! It was designed and made by Chris Ploof. We found Chris's work in the lark book 500 Wedding Rings. We fell in love with his meteorite bands, but after searching his site, Mike found this one made of damascus steel.

We are very happy with the ring! Our day is fast approaching!

A Story Of April Fools Day.

I don't have any mischief planned for this year's April Fool's Day, but I do have a good story about a previous prank.

One year- Mom decided to give the old padded and broken toilet seat one last thrill before it got thrown in the trash. Giggling, I'm sure, she sprayed the seat with a layer of spray adhesive.

She sat patiently waiting in the kitchen for her first victim. Finally my unsuspecting little sister emerged groggily from her bedroom half asleep.

Little Laura closed the bathroom door, and my mom rushed to hear what she had been waiting for all morning. YELP! THUNK! Laura screeched as the toilet seat peeled off her bare butt and clunked back down to the bowl. Falling over with laughter- Mom had just pulled off the best April fool's day joke our household had ever seen.

Luckily, I came down shortly after, just in time to witness the tail end of the prank, and did not become a victim of my Mom's prank myself.

Happy April Fool's Day! Hope you don't get glued to the bowl!

Busy day

I finally got my instructions and photographs submitted to the 30 Minute Earrings book that I got into. I've been afraid to submit it because it's my first publication...and I wanted it to make sense :)

I picked up some PCB etchant and some baking soda for the etchings I'll be doing next week. I'll be working on drawings up until then. I'll post some images once I get some more done.

I also got a good jump on a custom order for a friend that isn't needed until May.

Tonight I'll be cleaning the basement, maybe doing some more studio work, and then getting a list of bridal shower guests together for my hostess.

Can't wait to get some jewelry made!

Box Clasp Adventure

I'm finally biting the bullet! I'm going to finish this bracelet once and for all! I made this beautiful Etruscan chain bracelet a couple of years ago. It took me several months to make and I've been afraid to touch it ever since.

Well, I'm going to finish it AND I'll be making my first box clasp for it. The clasp will be capped with this beautiful smithsonite.

It's pretty pathetic that I haven't made a box clasp already, but it's been one of the fears I've had to overcome. So, now that I've gotten some larger pieces of jewelry finished, and a bunch of things checked off of my to-do list I'm going to experiment with a decorative clasp.

Below is just the start of a sample. I'm sure I'll be making several samples in copper before I've got it figured out well enough to commit to a successful clasp.

Milo Tail Necklace Finished

Here it is! I made a necklace to go with the earrings made from my Milo's tail. The theory behind this is a dog uses his tail to convey emotions and personality...and humans use jewelry and adornment to do the same. So here is a combination of the two.

I'd say the dog who donated the fur, and the person who wears this necklace have a fun and playful personality ;)

I've been working on this necklace for so long now. I made a giant leap today with it's assembly. I also added all of the tube settings on the links that will contain amber cabochons. I still need to fidget with the way the necklace lays. The polka-dot jasper is just sitting in the bezel, it's not set yet- but I can't wait until I can put in all of the stones and call this done!

Yesterday, my Dad and I got all of the photographs taken for the 30 Minute Earrings book that I got accepted into. Half a day in the studio with my Dad was a lot of fun. He has always gone above and beyond when he helps with a project. The photographs turned out great!

Today I re-wrote my outline, and inserted the images we took. I still have a lot of fidgeting and editing to do, but I'm almost there. I'm ahead of schedule too! Hopefully by the time the deadline approaches I'll be all set with room to breath!

Some more pieces I've been working on. They're not quite done yet. I've still got to do some finishing, but I'm waiting for some supplies to come in from Rio :).

is a set with snowflake obsidian. The bracelet is very similar to one I made earlier, and the extra links made great earrings. These pieces will have a high polish when finished.

Below are a bunch of pieces I made using serephenite, ocean jasper, crazy lace agate, blue lace agate, and sun stone. The pendant to the left is a very translucent agate. I made the back completely open so it will take on the color of your outfit. It's really beautiful on

And this is another picture of my mookaite bangle. I had a request to show it on my hand. It follows the curve of my wrist just like I was aiming for. Yea!

Finishing My Set Of Milo Cups.

I made these earrings using the tip of my dog's tail because it was the only fur on his body that was long enough to cut and use.

Then I thought, what a coincidence that dogs use their tails and ears to express themselves. And people use jewelry to express their personalities.

So I made the earrings, and now I'm finally making the matching necklace. Using carefully cut segments of my Milo's tail, I'll be filling the links posted below.

This is a picture that Mike took on a fishing trip in the lower Niagara river. Somebody is in the process of catching a fish- as you can see from the bent fishing rod. I'm not sure who the fisherman is.

Fishing in the lower Niagara is a blast. I didn't go on this particular trip, but I've been out there in the cold several times and it is always a good time.

Oh Bristle Disks- I Love You!

Back in December, fellow metalsmith and blogger Catherine Chandler posted a review on 3M™'s bristle disks. I finally got around to using them, and I'm so glad that I did. Check out Catherine's review on the Etsy Metal blog here. Thanks Catherine!

I used the bristle disks on my flex shaft to clean up the slowly progressing polka-dot jasper necklace links. The picture below is the pendant arranged under the links. (I was just playing with the links, they'll actually form a necklace when they're ready.)

The perfect 10 minutes of entertainment fell on my way home from work. NPR's Melissa Block reported on the lesser known side of comedian/ actor Steve Martin. He started playing the banjo at age 17, and truly has a passion for it. He writes his own music and just came out with a CD called The Crow. Getting Back Into The Swing Of Things

I think I'm getting back into studio mode. For the next couple of weeks I suspect I'll be eating breathing and dreaming projects to work on. I got a great start today with a neat bangle. I was just playing with some wire and stones and things started to take form. This bangle has a vine- like floral look to it. I'm looking forward to it's final polish. I have just two bezels to solder and then it goes to the wheel.

I also got a chance to correct the construction of my plume jasper pendant. I had originally backed the stone with silver sheet, however the connection from the stone to the decorative piece on top was weak.

I re-made the bottom portion of the pendant by using wire shaped to the exact profile of the stone. This gives the decorative piece a solid component to be soldered to, rather than being connected to the seam where the bezel meets the sheet (not a very stable joint I have learned.)

Now I just have to attach the other side of the chain, and solder the bezel. Then a bit of finishing and this long time project should be done!

I also happened to get a bunch of bezels for some other projects soldered to their bases.

Back To Jewelry

I started refining the links to my polka-dot jasper necklace. I'll be at the assembly stage soon! I still have to figure out a clasp for the links, and I'm not quite set on my idea to attach the centerpiece to the links. All in good time though.

I also finished some ocean jasper rings. Pretty simple bezel set rings, with an open back to see the beautiful backs of each stone. Each ring is a little different from the next.

What Will You Do When You Retire?

In the midst of the blustery winter weather that January brings to western New York stands my dear old Dad with his bike. Equipped with studded snow tires, special space age clothing to help him bear the negative temperatures, and a mustache to catch the drips- he starts his 30 mile trek.

Pop retired this past December, and hasn't let grass grow under his bicycle seat shaped butt. He can ride his age in miles faster than I can scrape the ice off my car windshield.

Biking isn't a recent hobby, but rather a reclaimed one. When he was much younger...younger than I can ever imagine him being- he and a just-as-crazy friend rode their bikes from Boston to San Diego in 50 days. With a tent and few spare tires on their backs they pedaled across the country.

My Dad has indirectly taught me that life is like a bicycle ride. Overall it is good. Often there are tough hills to climb, but always with a down hill reward. Sometimes you hit a pothole and get jolted from your path- other times you can take your hands off the bars, and feel the wind blowing through your hair. Pedal fast, and then let your feet go to see how far you can coast. Always keep your eye out for traffic, then take the back roads to slow down and enjoy the wildflowers along the way.

This is the poem that Dad left for me when I went away to college. I can never read it without crying.

It's Blue!

I work for a gemologist, so I think Mike had a lot of fun picking my boss's brain about stones. Mike wanted a blue one, so this is the diamond he picked out. It's set into an antique looking setting with little bead set diamonds up and down and all around. Very pretty and unusual!

It sounds funny, but I love Mondays. I get to spend them in the studio-except today. I was planning to get a bunch of jewelry finished, but instead had to run errands. I hate when that happens.

One of those errands though, was a stop at the post office to drop off my application to the Roycroft summer and winter festivals. So that's good to get out of the way.

Then I had to run to Home Depot to get a new space heater since the basement this time of year is colder than cold and the last heater gave up on me. While I was out, I noticed that Office Depot was going out of business, so I had to stop to see what they had. I picked up a cheap rolling chair for my studio, packaging supplies, a calculator and stapler for my shows, and finally a wireless printer. I wasn't going to buy one for a while, but my other one crapped out and I need one to print the rest of my applications.

It must be the cold weather, or lack of light- but by the time I got home I was exhausted and instead of being productive in the studio I snuggled with my pup until my pilates class.

I put a little package of pieces together that I'll be working on tomorrow. Everything is all organized and ready to go. Tomorrow I'll get some pieces done.

Filters, Proposal, and Banjo

Today, after a month of sitting in my basement, Mike and I put the filters in my dust collector. This little project was supposed to be done way back in October, but due to some ordering mix- ups, I didn't receive the filters until mid December- and by then I was knee deep in Christmas.

I also got my proposal e-mailed to Lark Books for the 30 Minute Earrings Publication! Wish me luck! I've never applied to anything like this before, so I'm just excited to have the guts to do it.

Last but not least, I got some good banjo practice in today. I practiced Friday and Saturday too. My fingers are sore, but my speed with changing chords has been improving!

This new calendar thing is working out great! I look at it every morning for my general obligations of the day. Then based on that, make a detailed list of things to do. At the end of the day I write my specific accomplishments on the calendar and check them off. It's such a good feeling to be back in regular (and very productive) routine.

Tomorrow, I'll be re-familiarizing myself with my studio. My task for the day is to look at all of the unfinished pieces I intended to have done for Christmas, and put a timeline on them. I get to start working again!

Meet My New Boss

I went out and bought two calendars yesterday. A new one for my purse to keep on me at all times, and then a GIGANTIC calendar for the fridge. I need the whole year to be on one page so that I can prepare for my endeavors appropriately. No more turning a page, and then- SURPRISE! There is a big deadline in two weeks that got forgotten because it was covered by April.

I filled out all of my yearly obligations...and yes they are all color coded because it's just easier for me to comprehend. Every day has a commitment, weather it is just to practice my banjo , a designated studio day, or a show. I have to stay organized in order to be able to accomplish everything I want to do this year with my jewelry.

My goals are easier to fulfill if they're organized on paper-looking at me in the face every day.

On another note, I signed up to take an online course to learn QuickBooks. (That's on the calendar too).

Only a little over one week into 2009 and I'm moving right along...and looking at my huge calendar-I have a feeling this year is going to fly by really fast.

Booth Advice Needed

In the previous post I have a picture of a mock setup for an indoor display. I need some advice on what to use for walls to frame my 10x10 allotment of space.

I have an idea that would use PVC pipe, and it's appropriate angle joints (if that's what they're called) to create a big cube. Something I can easily assemble, and strong enough to hang curtains and lights from. Maybe even concealing extension cords within the tubing.

Is this a common way to construct a booth- or bad news? Do any of you indoor show do-ers have any suggestions for me? I'd appreciate any suggestions. I have until the end of may, so time is on my side....right?

I sent out my first show application of the year today! I had to do some major preparation because I have never done this type of show before. I needed a photo of my booth, however, I've never had to set one up for the previous shows that I've done.

Soooo, I turned the dining room into my jewelry booth! Complete with my new glass cases, neck pads and earring displays.

The booth looks pretty good for a mock-up, but will definitely need more additions and alterations by the time of the show. I'm hoping this is good for the judges.

For the application, I also had to include a picture of myself working in the studio. This is to prove that all of the work is handmade by me. This is me "at work". :)

Besides getting the application in, I got a list together of all the other shows I'm going to apply for this year. I'm hoping to do 6- if I get accepted. This will be a big challenge for me while working a full time job, but I think I'm up for it!

I also got all of my tax info together! I can't believe how much I've done this week. I'm usually a last minute kind of girl, but I'm having fun being on the ball.

Tomorrow, I'll be photographing some materials so I can finish my application for the 30 minute earrings book. That's an exciting step that I'm looking forward to completing. I don't know if I'll get accepted, but I'm so glad that I'm ready to put more effort into promoting my work!

My Grandma got me these pajamas for Christmas. I just had to post some images of them. I can't get over how cute they are. Thanks Grandma :)

Different For Me

This necklace isn't really the style of jewelry that I make on a regular basis, but was a custom order I did for Christmas. I think it turned out very pretty. I have never Incorporated beading in my pieces-that I can remember anyway.

The chain is sterling silver, with 14 karat yellow gold hammered links. The charms and findings are all handmade, and the beads are pink quartz and colored pearls

It's a very sweet looking necklace. And happily, the last custom piece I will be doing.
